Whether you want to kick back and enjoy all the coastal city has to offer or head off and explore, Townsville is the perfect base to discover the magnificent wonders of the tropics.

Attractions and Entertainment

Sky DivingTownsville and its twin city, Thuringowa, make up Australia’s largest tropical city and provide a premier destination for visitors wanting a genuine taste of life in the tropics.

Townsville offers perfect weather to enjoy a diversity of experiences that range from the excitement of skydiving and ‘barra’ fishing, to the magic of Magnetic Island, the historical charm of Charters Towers and the breathtaking rainforest of the Paluma Ranges.

Enjoy the beachfront promenade, The Strand, in the heart of Townsville city. A 2.5km stretch of beach lined with restaurants, cafes, bars, barbeque/picnic areas, swimming enclosures/pools, sporting and recreational facilities, walking paths – all with sweeping views across Cleveland Bay and Magnetic Island.

To experience the outback and the flavour of the goldrush era, take a tour or drive 135 kilometres west from Townsville to the heritage centre of Charters Towers. This is a city of history and charm that boomed following the 1872 discovery of gold in the area. Visitors can relive the legends and history of this bygone era through the Ghosts of Gold experience.

Shopping Precincts

Townsville has numerous shopping malls that over the next couple of years will be receiving major refurbishment, due to the growing demand. But Shopping is not strictly contained to the suburban shopping centers, with the Flinders Mall in the CBD housing intimate clothing boutiques and high end retailers providing those stylish dresses and suits to dress to impress in. The Fashion Gallery is a Townsville institution, providing the one stop shop for exquisite dresses and gowns for the every social occasion on the Townsville calendar.

For those who love markets, Cotters Market is North Queensland's award winning arts and crafts market held every Sunday between 8.30 a.m. and 1.00 p.m. in Flinders Mall Townsville. Cotters Market is a great place to shop. They have ultra-fresh fruit and vegetables, stunning jewelery, original art works, massages, woodwork, stuffed toads, home-baked cakes, gifts for all occasions and entertainment. This is one of North Queenslands' largest market meets and is restricted to selling only North Queensland arts, crafts, produce and products.

Transport options

Townsville's public transport system consists of bus services operated by Sunbus. Sunbus provides regular services between many parts of the city, and also operates several express routes. Public transport is also available from the CBD to Bushland Beach, a route run by Townsville’s Hermit Park Bus Service, Townsville's biggest Charter Bus Service. In addition to the bus system, taxis (or cabs) operate 24 hours a day and service all parts of the metropolitan area.

Regular ferry and vehicular barge services operate to Magnetic Island and Palm Island. The ferry service to both islands is operated by Sunferries.

Fantastic apartment close to city. Fantastic food options along Palmer Street. Staff very helpful. We had a huge room with ample space for family of 5. Two bedrooms, two bathrooms in a quiet location close to everything. We will be back.
