We have compiled a list of 5 of our favourites things to do in Sydney – whether you’re a first-time visitor, returning visitor or Sydney-dweller these must-do’s are guaranteed to give you a true sense of what Sydney is all about.
1. Walk through Royal Botanic Gardens
One of the most breathtakingly beautiful settings you will see anywhere, with the gardens filling an area of land between the harbour and the eastern part of the central business district. The gardens sit on the side of an undulating piece of land and the harbour views from up on the hill are superb.
Our tip: Grab some takeaway or pack a picnic lunch, grab a blanket and spend a sunny afternoon taking it all in.
2. Open Air Cinema (and Moonlight Cinema)
The Open Air Cinema is another must (during the summer months). The Open Air Cinema is located close to Mrs Macquarie’s Chair in the Royal Botanic Gardens. With a drink in hand, big screen with the Sydney City Skyline, Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge as a backdrop it is hard to beat.
Our tip: Take a raincoat just in case!
3. Spend a day in The Rocks
The Rocks is where members of the First Fleet stepped ashore on 26 January 1788 and British settlement of Australia was first established. Today it is Sydney’s historic old town quarter, nestled between the famous Sydney Harbour Bridge and Sydney Opera House. Discover the stories behind its charming cobblestone laneways and historic buildings on an entertaining walking tour or simply wander about and experience a precinct steeped in history. The Rocks has great shopping, some of Sydney’s finest food and magical harbour views make The Rocks a unique destination not to be missed.
Our tip: Visit on the weekend and take in the vibe of The Rocks Market - over 150 stalls hold surprises and delights every Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 5pm, at the Northern end of George Street, The Rocks. Strolling under the sails you’ll find art and craft, jewellery, frames, photography, indigenous artwares, food and much more.
4. Sculptures By the Sea - Bondi Beach
Australia's largest annual outdoor free to the public exhibition of contemporary sculpture runs for three weeks during November. Staged along Sydney's spectacular Bondi to Tamarama coastal walk, the exhibition now attracts over 450,000 visitors and has exhibits by over 100 artists from Australia and overseas.
Our tip: Finish your walk along the Sculptures By the Sea with fish ‘n chips on Bondi Beach.
5. Sydney Tower Observation Deck
From the golden beaches to the distant Blue Mountains, Sydney Tower takes you to the highest point above Sydney Australia for breathtaking 360-degree views. Enjoy spectacular Sydney views, including the Sydney Harbour Bridge, Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour, with free telescopes and free guided tour on Observation Deck. Plus your ticket to the top includes OzTrek, the largest simulated ride in Australia, which takes you on an amazing virtual reality adventure across Australia's cultural history and geography.
Our tip: Sydney Revolving Restaurant at the top of Sydney Tower offers an all-you-can-eat buffet including Australian specialties such as kangaroo and camel!
