Natural Wonders in Cairns
There is so much to do in Cairns – whether you like shopping, diving, snorkelling, dining or adventure. But you can’t go to Cairns without experiencing some of the natural wonders on offer such as the Daintree Rainforest, the Great Barrier Reef, Botanical Gardens and the many walks and natural waterfalls and swimming holes.
The Daintree Rainforest
The Daintree Rainforest is one of the most beautiful examples of Mother Nature in the world. It is home to the most diverse range of plants and animals on earth, and all are found within an area of approximately 1200 square kilometres – the largest chunk of tropical rainforest in Australia. It is here that you will find untouched, green rainforest, golden beaches with calm water, hiking tracks, thousands of species of birds and other wildlife and remote wilderness.
The Great Barrier Reef
Some of the most exotic and rare diving and snorkelling in the world can be found here in the beautiful reefs. It is here that you will see magnificently bright coloured fish, coral, and array of sea life. Emerge yourself into the clear warm water and relax in the hot sun - a trip to the Great Barrier Reef will be a glorious experience. The combination of glorious weather, unspoilt rainforest, long white beaches, and warm blue water sets a scene for paradise. Everyone can enjoy the Great Barrier Reef - whether you are a non swimmer, a family with children or an avid diver you will find an activity that suites your needs such as relaxing on a tropical island, snorkelling, going on a glass bottom boat tour, a private reef charter on a luxurious vessel or hop on a helicopter flight over the Great Barrier Reef.
The 1.3 km Red Arrow circuit is one of a pair of tracks leading up the Mt. Whitfield Conservation Park behind the Cairns Botanical Gardens. The hike takes approximately 40 minutes to one hour to complete. At the top of the Red Arrow walk you will be left breathless by the spectacular views of Trinity Inlet, the Coral Sea and Cairns city, and the fresh breeze is a welcome relief from the rainforest heat.
Make sure to also visit Walsh’s Pyramid the highest freestanding natural pyramid in the world. Used for hiking, the mountain is 922 metres tall and quite steep – but a spectacular site not to be missed.
Falls and Water Holes
Surrounded by lush rainforest, the Babinda Boulders is a popular swimming hole and tourist attraction south of Cairns. It is a classic example of the fast flowing tropical creeks in the area that are perfect for afternoon dips in the cool water to combat the tropical heat.
Take a drive to Crystal Cascades, a secluded freshwater swimming hole, hidden in a tropical rainforest. Kept a secret by the locals – these cascades are a series of small waterfalls flow into large pools surrounded by boulders.
There are many more natural attractions in Cairns such as the Cairns Curtain Fig Trees, Cairns Botanical Gardens and Tinaroo Dam. So if one thing is for sure, you will note be bored on your next trip to Cairns!

Stayed during Easter in a 3 B/r with our grown up family. Great location and terrific views. We have stayed in quite a lot of accommodation in Cairns and this rates high for a large family.
